Naturellement sophistiqués – Mathieu Valade

SEPTEMBER 7 TO OCTOBER 7 2018

Naturellement sophistiqués is a collection of recent works representing the artist’s reflections on our ways of seeing and common interpretations of art history. Some works feature objects and photographs beneath frosted glass, revealing blurry shapes and colours without offering a clear idea of what is being presented to us. Another section of the exhibition presents a two-channel video installation featuring influential figures in modern art history, seen from a surprising perspective that offers an alternative view of history.

Mathieu Valade’s artistic practice explores the contradictory relationship between simple forms and the images they evoke when viewed from another perspective. The sculptural objects and drawings he produces, which always demonstrate a high degree of plasticity, incorporate representative elements such as typography, logos, pictographs, and geometric shapes, to give rise to new potential interpretations. The resulting images of his approach are powerful, poetic, and evocative, and can be appreciated on a purely aesthetic basis, while yet carrying deep resonance rooted in an in-depth reflection of the artist.

Born in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield in 1979, Mathieu Valade lives and works in Chicoutimi. He exhibited his work at the MAC VAL (Paris), the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec and in numerous artists run centres, galleries and major events in Canada, Brazil, the United States, France, Spain, Greece and Sweden. His works are part of the permanent and Prêt d’œuvres d’art collections of the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, the Musée d’art contemporain de Baie-Saint-Paul, Pierre Courtin Collection, Biron Health Group, as well as many private collections. He is also a founding member of the AMV and Pique-nique collectives.
