Paryse Martin

Paryse Martin’s multidisciplinary practice combines painting, sculpture, installation, and animation. Inspired by natural, poetic, and fairy tale universes, her surrealist and baroque works engage in the logic of dreaming and storytelling. The artist has fun creating work that is both strange and captivating, and the beings that inhabit her marvelous systems exchange inquiring looks with the visitors.

For the practical realization of her projects, Paryse Martin uses traditional art making techniques and borrows from craft, folk art, and women’s traditional decorative arts. The adventurous spirit with which she approaches her work emphasizes small gestures, playful strategies and a variety of protocols, adding a dimension of the unexpected. The visitor is invited into a concentrated aesthetic experience that highlights the paradoxes of our existence.

Each of her works creates a visual poetry in which the subjects are formed through interweaving. Themes of man and beast, the everyday and the extraordinary, food and pleasures, human and nature, reality and magic, the utilitarian and the decorative are also brought together through an excessive and sensualist theatricality. The wide range of textures and elements used in these compositions creates a disorienting upheaval of the senses.

Born in Caribou, Maine (United States) in 1959, Paryse Martin has a doctorate in art studies and practice from UQAM. She has been a lecturer at Université Laval in Quebec City since 1991. She has been the recipient of several grants from the Canada Council for the Arts and the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, and has presented many exhibitions in Quebec, across Canada, and abroad.
