A Tree Fell On It – Graeme Patterson

SEPTEMBER 10 TO OCTOBER 10 2021

For his third exhibition at Galerie 3, Graeme Patterson presents A Tree Fell on It, a major new multidisciplinary project. Over the past three years, the artist has been busy developing a series of complex works consisting of large-scale models, kinetic sculptures, 3D printing, interactive video, music and, for the first time, virtual reality. Inspired by the fall of a 60-year-old tree on the artist’s house, this body of work explores the physical and emotional relationship of the occupants of one location.

The House (2021), central piece of this ensemble, transports us into narrative universes where the material world dialogues with the virtual one. Invited to follow a space disco starling and a fox, the viewer is invited to a participatory virtual experience. Along the way, he will actively explore different fictional spaces that will confront him with a variety of emotionally charged situations. Unique to each visitor, this experiment seeks to make tangible the abstract relationships underlying the experience of an environment.

Accompanying this work, a series of ten kinetic and multimedia sculptures as well as an interactive video game, break down certain aspects of virtual reality in order to deepen its experience and purpose. Disturbing and poetic, they also echo the environmental concerns that have fuelled the artist’s practice for many years.
