Mathieu Valade

Mathieu Valade’s artistic practice explores the contradictory relationship between simple forms and the images they evoke when viewed from another perspective. The sculptural objects and drawings he produces, which always demonstrate a high degree of plasticity, incorporate representative elements such as typography, logos, pictographs, and geometric shapes, to give rise to new potential interpretations.

 The resulting images of his approach are powerful, poetic, and evocative, and can be appreciated on a purely aesthetic basis, while yet carrying deep resonance rooted in an in-depth reflection of the artist.

Born in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield in 1979, Mathieu Valade lives and works in Chicoutimi. He exhibited his work at the MAC VAL (Paris), the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec and in numerous artists run centres, galleries and major events in Canada, Brazil, the United States, France, Spain, Greece and Sweden. He is also a founding member of the AMV and Pique-nique collectives.

His works have also been featured in prestigious events such as C’est arrivé près de chez vous at MNBAQ, Manif d’art 4 and 8, Art Souterrain and EXMURO. He has been awarded numerous grants by the Conseil des arts du Québec as well as the coveted Bourse René Richard, a grant awarded for excellence in the Master’s program in Visual Arts at Université Laval, in 2005. 

His work is included in a number of public and private collections such as:
