My Vegetable Garden – Dan Brault

APRIL 29 – MAY 30 2021

As usual, Dan Brault offers us a very generous exhibition in which he synthesizes his pictorial concerns. The 41 works that make up this body of work are presented in five different media—paper, cardboard, aluminum panel, canvas and even Jacquard tapestry—and refer to different periods of his production as well as to the very process of his creation.

Evoking the sketchbook or the preparatory work, the series of drawings and the paintings on cardboard explore the subtle border between the work and the sketch. The works on aluminum panels, with their oval shape and transparent colours, remind us of the tempera period, while the large-format canvases are the natural evolution of his recent research. Finally, three works on Jacquard tapestry open his work to new adventures and promising perspectives.

Winter was calm, tardy and auspicious for germination. I caught a creative fever at the studio that transformed me into a paint gardener. Planting some small landscape paintings—here, a row of drawings, straight out of my sketchbooks—there and further still, a group of paintings that have always preoccupied my mind! Much like a vegetable garden overflowing with promises and life, I have painted with total freedom, forgetting notions of rigour and pertinence and opposing them to glibness and levity. Also, I felt like harvesting what my eagerness and my imagination had to offer. I let go of my garden so that the yield would become a surprise. And as the saying goes: “one cannot retain Spring in his garden…”
