Ruses et ravissements, étude plus ou moins exacte du monde – Claudie Gagnon

SEPTEMBER 12 TO OCTOBER 11 2020

From the beginning of her practice, Claudie Gagnon has always been able to transport us into decidedly singular universes. Ruses et ravissements, étude plus ou moins exacte du monde is no exception. The exhibition is presented as a generous journey to be explored slowly. At the entrance, three pieces each bearing an embroidered inscription set the tone for our visit: RAVISH/TIME/PARADISE.

Through multiple diversions, Claudie Gagnon generates unlikely encounters that magnify objects beyond their tangible reality. These new assemblages combine references to botany, medicine, natural sciences, crafts, art history and domesticity and end up creating objects that are as wonderful as they are strange. Oscillating between fascination and aversion, the emerging works present a universe where wonder and enchantment can tip over at any moment. The material and conceptual poetry of this corpus also emphasize a strong symbolism evoking vanity, a recurring theme in the artist’s work.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to discover the video Scènes de genre (2018) including a series of ten living tableaux, some of which are the origin of the photo-painting of the exhibition Contrefaçons presented at Galerie 3 in 2018.
